At Outer Inc., we care deeply about your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, protect, and share your information when you use the Outer mobile app and its services. By using the app, you agree to the practices described here. If you have any questions or concerns, you can always reach us at hello@outer.app.
We collect both personal and non-personal information to help you connect more easily with others, discover nearby plans, stay safe, and get the most out of the app. Personal data may include your name, email address, and profile information such as age, country, gender, languages spoken, and interests. You may upload a profile photo and share user-generated content like messages, group chats, and plan details. Some features may require optional verification to maintain the integrity of the platform. In such cases, we may request a live photo, which is processed securely using Amazon’s Rekognition technology for identity confirmation and moderation. These verification images are not stored beyond the verification process unless legally required. We do not allow unauthorized or inappropriate content on the platform, and our moderation systems — a combination of automated AI and human oversight — are in place to detect and prevent misuse.
We also collect location data to power core features of the app, such as showing you who’s nearby or what casual plans are happening around you. Your precise location is never shared. Instead, we show others a general sense of your distance, blurred to protect privacy. You can hide your location at any time in your app settings. When you create or join a plan, only its general location is visible on the map so others can discover it. The specific meeting point is shared within the event chat, only visible to participants. You can always choose to keep plans private and limit who sees or joins them. You also have control over your visibility in the app — including the ability to close your direct messages to non-friends or leave any group chat at will.
If you decide to purchase a premium subscription, we store your subscription status to ensure you can access the correct features. Payments are handled securely by trusted third-party platforms like Apple and Google, and we do not collect or retain your credit card or billing information. Your purchase history may be stored for legal or accounting purposes, including tax compliance and fraud prevention.
We use tools like Firebase Analytics to collect anonymized data about how users interact with the app. This includes information like screen views, button taps, time spent on certain features, and technical diagnostics. This data helps us understand what works, where issues may exist, and how to improve the app. We do not collect or analyze the contents of your messages or plans for advertising purposes. Some of this information, like your IP address or device ID, may be classified as personal data under laws like GDPR before anonymization. We use this data under legitimate interest to ensure proper app performance and monitor for security threats. You can contact us at any time if you'd like us to delete analytics data linked to your account.
Depending on how and where you use the app, we process your data based on one or more legal bases. When you use Outer to create or join plans and communicate with others, we rely on contractual necessity — meaning we need to process this data to provide the service you requested. In other cases, we rely on our legitimate interest in maintaining and improving the app, preventing fraud, and ensuring safety. In situations where we are legally required to keep certain records — such as in response to law enforcement, fraud investigations, or applicable tax laws — we comply accordingly. For features that involve optional data collection, such as location access or AI-based recommendations, we ask for your explicit consent. You can withdraw consent at any time in the app settings.
You have full rights to manage your data. These rights may vary depending on where you live, but they generally include the right to access, correct, update, delete, or move your information. You can also restrict or object to certain types of data processing. If you wish to exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@outer.app. We will verify your identity and respond within the time limits required by law.
We retain your personal data only for as long as it’s necessary to provide our services and fulfill legal obligations. Profile and content data are stored while your account is active and deleted when your account is permanently removed. Some data, such as transaction or subscription history, may be retained longer if required by law. If your account remains inactive for an extended period, we may contact you before removing it.
Security is a top priority at Outer. We use end-to-end encryption during transmission and secure storage to protect your data. Access to sensitive information is limited to authorized personnel, and our systems undergo regular audits and testing. No system is completely immune to risk, but we take every reasonable precaution to protect your data. If you suspect unauthorized access to your account, we encourage you to report it immediately.
Because our infrastructure and service providers operate globally, your information may be transferred to and processed in countries outside of your home jurisdiction, such as the United States or countries within the European Union. We take steps to ensure these international transfers are secure and compliant with applicable laws, including the use of EU Standard Contractual Clauses and strict vendor agreements.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the app, technology, or regulations. When we do, we will revise the “last updated” date at the top of the policy. If there are material changes to how we handle your information, we will notify you through the app or via email where required. We encourage you to review this policy periodically to stay informed.
If you are a California resident, you are entitled to additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). These include the right to know what personal data we collect, the right to request access or deletion, the right to correct inaccurate information, and the right to opt out of certain types of data sharing. Outer does not sell personal information and does not share user data for advertising purposes. If you wish to exercise your California privacy rights, email us at hello@outer.app.
For any questions, concerns, or data requests related to your privacy, reach out to us at hello@outer.app. We're committed to being transparent and responsive in all matters related to user privacy.
